FTP 550 Error

FTP 550 errors are 'No Permission' errors and occur when documents are uploaded to folders without suitable owner permissions or indeed write permissions by your user.

This happens mainly if either the directory in question is owned by another user, or has incorrect CHMOD settings. Remember, a directory has to be 'executable' and 'writeable' in order to enter it thus a minimum 'execute' or '5' CHMOD must be set for your user.

Alternatively you may be attempting to upload to a legitimate folder inside httpdocs but the permissions on the folder are incorrect thus removing your ability to upload. You will receive an FTP 550 error.

In this situation you will need to check the CHMOD (permissions) on the folder itself by right clicking the folder in question and selecting "Info" or "Properties". Your FTP client may have slightly different wording at this point.

To avoid an FTP 550 error, you need to allow "Write" to the owner (you) at least in order to allow you to upload files to this directory.
